Matt Carlisle QB Newark Catholic opens with a Bang !!!

Three men standing in a field with one man holding onto the antenna.

Matt Carlisle QB 6’3†195lbs. Senior at Newark Catholic found his team down 29 to 14 in the second half against their opening opponent of the 2019 season, Edon High School.  We told you in a earlier article that this game was being played on the turf field at Norhern Ohio U. in Ada, Ohio (By the way, the hometown of Wilson Sports where the number 1 footballs are made) so it was a big deal for both of the high schools.

Not to worry, and for sure don’t count out a Sink coached QB out in this situation.  Matt took charge of his team and the game, throwing 3 straight TD passes and Coach Aiello’s defense shut down Edon from that point on for a magnificent win for the Green Wave with a final score being 35 to 29.   Carlisle finished the night tying the all time passing record in one game for Newark Catholic by throwing a total of 5 TD passes.  Only 2 other QBS were able to do the same.   He rushed for 87 yards while being sacked a record number of times and for those who know how these stats are kept, that is 87 yards after deducting all the sack yardage.   Matt was 20 of 36 for a total 216 yards passing in the game.

Now every great QB knows he can’t do it all by himself, and Matt didn’t, he had help from his loyal Coach Sink work out partner, WR Slater Evans.   (See article called It’s Infectious from last week at Coach Sink) Slater, who is not a giant in stature but is in the Heart department, had 6 receptions for 79 yards and a Newark Catholic record tying 3 TD’s in one game.  (10th receiver in history at catholic according to Coach Pickering).  I have a feeling these 2 guys are just getting started in the record breaking business for the Green Wave this year.

Great job by both and considering Matt having only started 5 varsity games before this one due to and injury ending season last year, has that “ITâ€Â factor that the awesome guys that play the QB position need to be great.   I am looking forward to Matt having a sensational Senior year and in my estimation has what it takes to play football on the next level next year.     Great opener Matt Carlisle and Slater Evans.
