Horvath to Heidenreich, sound familiar? If you have been reading this post for the last 2 years, you have seen this combo regularly winning games for the US Naval Academy. With the help of many other top Navy Midshipmen, they bring the regular season total record to 10 wins 2 losses and 7 and 1 tie for the American Conference Championship with North Texas and Tulane (where an outstanding young coach and lifelong friend, Will Hall, has just become the Head Coach.)At the 6:32 mark left in the fourth quarter the score was 16 to 10 Army, and it was 4th down and goal to go at the 8-yard line. Mr. cool, QB Blake Horvath took a 2 step drop and gunned a rifle throw to Eli Heidenreich on a quick slant and with no safety back for Army it was clear sailing. Navy added the extra point to make it 17 to 16 Navy. Blake I might add, has done this over and over even in his HS career and at Navy making big play after another in pressure situations.
The rest of the game wasn’t with drama, after Army was held to 3 and out they punted and Navy was driving and using clock. Horvath ran the ball in the middle of the defense and as the Army tackler hit Blake, he drove his helmet right threw the ball in Blake’s arm. The ball popped up in the air and only in Blake Horvath style could he turn his body over, reach up and snatch the ball out of mid air while taking the ball over his head and placing it down on the ground before his body hit the turf, just inches from the first down. Everyone needs to watch this clip below the article. It is a Houdini Horvath move. The Refs got it right; he had complete control when he placed it down. Then Alex Tecza picked up the first down.
If I ever saw a perfect example of Adversity Breeds Greatness this was the game. They ran the clock out and the Governors Trophy stays right where it should for another year and that is with NAVY
Blake Horvath threw for 84 yards and 1 TD and 1 Int. while rushing for 107 yards in 34 carries and 1 more TD, Heidenreich had 72 yards of receiving and the 1 TD. Horvath has thrown for a record 1472 yards and 10 TDS and rushed for 1147 yards and 15 TDS this year. This is the second year of throwing and rushing for more than 1000 each.
Friday Jan. 2nd Navy plays Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl at 4:30 pm on ESPN
